Jenn & Nathan, Nathan & Jenn, he’s so into her, she’s so into him, didn’t matter that it rained, didn’t matter that the weather didn’t cooperate for our other e-session plans (Fall Colours and Snow Walk), their personalities, love [and brightly coloured clothes] popped off the page for me from this soft subdued landscape… didn’t matter that my flash took a dive into the lake [ironically, in its rain-jacket that helped to really keep the water in]. The sun actually came out and the laughs kept on rolling in… So ready for wedding love between these two!!!

Teaming with Style

For her Spring 2012 Collection, Canadian wedding gown designer Katherine Feiel and I decided to shoot at Halifax’s Lord Nelson for its glamourous grandeur… Friday before the shoot I was talking with Susan from Props Floral Design and mentioned the upcoming shoot of unique wedding gowns. Without skipping a beat, Susan and her team at Props showed up at the Lord Nelson with beautifully designed wedding bouquets inspired by Katherine’s gowns. I have to say, I LOVE working with a team of local women entrepreneurs and jump at the chance whenever it arises! Check out these fabulous wedding creations from these talented women!

Well, the “wild child” of Jill and Ned, and soon to be seen in Wildflower Clothing boutique I’m sure, is finally here! And what a sweet pea he is. You would never know this was their first child, as Jill and Ned were laid back and joking as always during Oscar’s photo session! And what a perfect little man they brought to my studio, look at those tiny little fingers and toes. The week before the session I was hunting for something to go with the green wallpaper background and found the perfect little baby blanket and hat, I don’t think the colours could be better together if I’d dyed them myself! And the morning of the session I looked out my window and gained sudden inspiration from the moss at the base of the trees in my backyard. Presto: a pea-pod baby boy

And then Jill walked in with the most gorgeous orange blanket with colourful tassels and we were all set for a warm and a cool look. I don’t think Jill and Ned thought he was going to settle into a deep sleep like he finally did upon that bed of green moss, but I think he liked having that soft pillow underneath his sweet head. Congratulations guys, can’t wait to see him grow up with such fun-loving parents.

Jill & Ned are having a baby! And Jill, who absolutely oozes style and owns a popular Halifax boutique, looks absolutely fantastic pregnant! Whenever I get the chance to shoot for Jill & Ned, we are pretty much assured to end up in tears laughing as we poke fun at ourselves and each other. Good luck with the birth and can’t wait to meet your new little one

Brides 2012

A big thank you to everyone who came out to Brides 2012, I had some really great chats with lots of brides and grooms to be, and even one bride from eight years ago! My booth was pretty similar to last year’s journalistic booth, with the addition of some of my studio furnishings

I had a lot of questions this year about my newspapers and postcards. I had my newspapers printed in the Fall of 2012 from The Poster Printers in New York, and I am checking with them to see if they still provide this service because I don’t see it advertized on their website any longer

The postcards are very similar to Thank You cards that I do for brides & grooms with their own photographs. The books in the rack were done just for the show, and the book on the table is my newest album with hard cover and hard, flush-mounted pages. My business cards, which I posted about last year here, are from Studio Z in California.

Welcome Cameron!

After having twins I’m sure little Cameron is a breeze for his parents! OK, maybe not a breeze… but I bet it’s a totally different ball game this time around.

I was so happy Suzanne brought her little Cameron in to be photographed, this was the fifth time I’ve photographed her family, starting with her sister Elise’s wedding! You may remember them from their most recent big family session or last Fall’s downtown session, or the prelude to the downtown session. In this blog post from 2010 there were two photographs with Suzanne’s family from a few years ago.

Well, Suzanne will tell you Cameron pooped and peed and spit up all over me (and the floor and the blankets), but I gotta tell you I really didn’t care one bit, I was so excited this little man got into such a deep sleep. He was an absolute perfect angel, the perfect size, the perfect age, perfect little nose, lips, fingers and toes…

Props & Brides 2012

OK this isn’t photos from Brides 2012, because Brides 2012 hasn’t happened yet! But it’s your fair warning that it is this Sunday at the WTCC in Halifax and yes, I’ll be there, for the -um- ninth year in a row I think!

And Props Floral Design, who I’m sure cannot top their booth from last year (a dress made of branches and flowers that was like 12 feet high and worn by a live model!), will be there too. I’ve been meaning to post these photos I did for Props in the Fall and somehow got busy with life and– you know how it goes. My friend Susan, owner of Props and an extraordinarily creative being, was feeling a renewed vigour in her talent, her industry, and her floral shop, and she wanted some photos to reflect that. We had a lot of fun playing with the sunlight in the photoshoot, and I wanted the photos to reflect Susan’s inner strength… I wanted her to look powerful and feminine at the same time.

Can’t wait to see all of you ladies again this weekend along with all of the other Halifax wedding vendors, and looking forward to meeting some brides-to-be, grooms-to-be, bridesmaids-to-be, sisters-of-brides-to-be, mothers-of-brides-to-be…! you catch my drift…

Market Maternity

No, I’m not trying to market maternity photos with this blog, we went to the Halifax Farmer’s Market to shoot maternity photos! I can’t even say how excited I am that I was able to twist Leah’s arm (ever so gently) to have our photo shoot take place at the market… I’d been eyeing these windows up for the last year or two with this exact look in mind, contrasty sunny lighting, blue windows, silhouettes, half silhouettes, strong shadows, lots of lines, deep blacks… sigh, how incredibly fulfilling it was as an artist to bring my vision to life! The time just zipped by and I had to remind myself that Leah might not be as excited to stand on the concrete for another hour with the weight of her growing baby on her back and feet! I remember only too well what that felt like…. I just have to say a word about the lighthouse in the background. A groom from 2010 made me promise not to put lighthouses in the background of his photos– for him a lighthouse means touristy, plastic, made-up, and contrived. For so many people who have moved away from Halifax though, like Leah, they are a part of our landscape here in Nova Scotia. I had to have a bit of an inner chuckle and I think the lighthouse in the background of some of these looks anything but plasticy and contrived and I hope you’ll agree
